The Trinity means there is one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each fully God, yet not three gods. This means they are not different roles like being a person, a husband, and a father.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” John 1:14
The Greek word John uses is Logos, which can mean word, expression, message, reason, or rational principle.
John 1:1–3 — The Word
John begins:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1
John then says:
“He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
— John 1:2–3
Notice that John has moved from calling the Word “it” conceptually to describing the Word as “He.”
Then comes the decisive statement:
John 1:14
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
John is telling us that the eternal Word became human.
And who is that person?
The remainder of the passage identifies Him as Jesus Christ:
“And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
— John 1:14
Then John the Baptist enters the narrative and says:
“This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”
— John 1:15
And John concludes the opening section:
“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
— John 1:17
